  • Human Rights Day is observed by the international community every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Wylie Hughes is going to speak about what human rights mean for us, and also what we can do in our own lives to make it happen every day.   • Wylie Hughes is going to talk about a very American cultural institution, which is Thanksgiving. Arguably, it is the most important family holiday for most Americans. Wylie will discuss its origins, its various meanings in people’s lives, and also the broader historical context which will also show how we always construct our very own history in a selective way.   • In one of the most popular TED videos, "Do schools kill creativity", Ken Robinson makes an entertaining and profoundly moving case for creating an education system that nurtures (rather than undermines) creativity. We will watch this video together, and Wylie Hughes will lead a discussion where you can voice your own opinion as well. We encourage you to watch the video at home as well.   • Come and join for us a Veterans' Day event, held by a retired American history teacher, Bob Norris. Originally called Armistice Day to celebrate the truce ending World War I, the presentation will be about Veterans Day, the US holiday that honors all people who have served in the armed forces of the United States. Bob will also talk about the broader historical context behind this holiday, as well as how war and peace are present in our lives today. He will invite participants to contribute to the discussion about what we can do to contribute to a more peaceful world around us, and why it is important to remember our history.
