Background information

About a year ago, twenty-four fellows from 11 countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia came together in an exchange program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Office of Citizen Exchanges, with the goal of exploring ways digital information technology has impacted our way of life from e-government, to the private sector, NGOs, social movements and the media. Those initial participants created Digital Communication Network (digicomnet), an association/startup of like-minded individuals using digital tools, engaging in cross-sector learning and promoting a free flow of quality information across borders. The association created by the initial participants has now over 2,100 members in the region and is rapidly expanding. Since our first program in October 2015, we had more exchanges and a variety of events in Chisinau, Moldova (https://www.facebook.com/rockitconference/videos/498142677037682/?autoplay_reason=all_page_organic_allowed&video_container_type=0&video_creator_product_type=2&app_id=2392950137&live_video_guests=0); Tallinn, Estonia; Vilnius, Lithuania (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V63cB3MJkkc&feature=share) and Yerevan, Armenia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da70fBuPVsA&feature=youtu.be). Our DCN board is currently coordinating, as many of you know, the tech camp and Rockit, in Warsaw, Poland.

Upcoming open competition

A total of 28 participants will be selected through an open competition process to come to the United States in one of two 18 day long professional programs, scheduled from June 11-28 and October 1-18, 2017. The exchange that candidates will join will be decided by the selection committee, based on the profile of the exchange.

Participants should work and reside in one of the following countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, and Ukraine. Selection will be based on the overall quality of the candidates, as well as their willingness and preparedness to make a contribution to the program. Please note that not all countries have to be represented, it will depend of the quality of the candidates.

Applicants for the program should be digital communication professionals, either with a journalistic or entrepreneurial background. They should work for media organizations (traditional or new media), communication companies, NGOs and social movements, or e-governments focusing on delivering media messages and using new tools of digital communication. Priority will be given to candidates who demonstrate an interest and capacity to develop or transform organizations for the digital age, and/or to create new digital communication products.

Some of the most promising applicants will be invited to participate in our upcoming regional digicomnet Forum, at the end of March, as part of the selection process for the U.S. exchanges. That regional Forum will focus on preparing/transforming organizations, either newsrooms or private sector/NGOs or government agencies for the digital age.

We would very much appreciate if you can spread the word about the new opportunity
