"Polaroidok, Image-transzferek, mindegyike még utólag, kézzel tovább festve, alakítva. Nagyítások, melyeknek témaválasztása, az alkalmazott színek kavalkádja, a kivitelezés egyedisége, esetlegessége... mind-mind olyan speciális, semmihez sem hasonlítható, de nagyon intenzív érzelmi hatással bíró képeket eredményeztek, melyek még a hivatalból naponta rengeteg fényképet végignéző fotómuzeológust is megérintették. Túl a képek, színek, formák vad, zabolátlan burjánzásán, a megfogalmazás módja is egyéni, nálunk, a magyar fotóművészetben nem nagy gyakorisággal előforduló, sok szempontból példaértékű. Az 1997-ben az Év Fotográfusa díjjal Washingtonban kitüntetett Lakatos Erika olyan szubjektív, új és minőségi hangot üt meg, melyre régen vártunk."(Kincses Károly)
A kiállítás megtekinthető | 2011. március 25 - május 8. között | minden hétköznap 14 és 19 óra | hétvégén 11 és 19 óra között
According to the official site of the United Nations, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid "pass laws". Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
Regarding the mission of the American Corner Budapest, similarly to the mission of other Corners worldwide, issues of tolerance take a central role in our programming. The American Corner Budapest commemorates this particular antidiscrimination day with its participation and support of the exhibition of Hungarian American photo artist of Roma origin, Erika Lakatos.

Hungarian House of Photography - Mai Manó House | 1065 Budapest, Nagymező utca 20.
Opening remarks by Tímea Junghaus | art historian
Music by | Nakatina Roma Icons Band
“Polaroids, Polaroid transfers – all subsequently re-touched, painted, and fashioned manually. The blow-ups display a variety of themes, a palette of colors, as well as a unique and development of her art. The outcome exhibits an intense emotional effect unequalled to anything seen before, impressing even the photo curator who ex officio stares at countless photos on a daily basis. Besides the wild and rampant proliferation of images, colors, and shapes in her work, the photographer’s individual mode of composition is also peculiar. Such articulation of artistic expression does not often occur in Hungarian photo art and, as such, is exemplary. Awarded with the title of Photographer of the Year in 1997 in Washington, Erika Lakatos demonstrates subjectivity with novelty and quality-an approach we’ve been waiting so long.” (Károly Kincses)

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH JAZZ EVENT WITH SPECIAL GUESTS FROM THE STATES
KATE McGARRYANDKEITH GANZ
AT THE BUDAPEST JAZZ CLUB
***admission free***
The six years of collaboration between Palmetto Records artist Kate McGarry and husband/guitarist Keith Ganz have produced four critically acclaimed recordings, a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album, and live performances that crackle with spontaneity and joy. Join their upcoming "dynamic duo" performance at the Budapest Jazz Club, co-organized by the American Corner Budapest and supported by the Embassy of the United States of America. You'll hear a wide range of composers from Irving Berlin to The Cars, with musical selections ranging from Celtic to Jazz, from Blues to Bossa Nova.
"This duo has figured out how to create jazz arrangements of songs by Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills and Ric Ocasek without compromising either the jazz or the rock'n'roll. The substitute chords, elasticized rhythms and deconstructionist solos make this satisfying jazz, while the lyrics are delivered with such forceful urgency that it's still satisfying rock'n'roll. The songs are transformed but never obscured." ~ Geoffrey Himes, Best CDs of 2008
With 4 critically acclaimed CDs and a 2009 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal to her credit, Kate McGarry is recognized as a jazz artist who brings authenticity and vitality to an extraordinarily wide range of material. The Wall St Journal calls her music "Austere and elegant", New York Times pronounced her "Astute and sensitive". Her music collaborations include projects with Jazz luminaries including Fred Hersch, Kurt Elling, Maria Schneider, and John Hollenbeck. She currently performs in many of venerated jazz clubs and festivals throughout the US and abroad, and as an educator has served on the faculty of Manhattan School of Music. Kate has represented the U.S. State Department and Jazz at Lincoln Center as a jazz ambassador for 3 years running in the American Music Abroad program. McGarry has been featured on NPR's All Things Considered, Marion McPartland's Piano Jazz, and Jazz Set with Dee Dee Bridgewater. She is currently recording her 5th CD for Palmetto Records which will be released later in 2011.
Keith Ganz is a guitarist, composer, arranger and producer. In addition to his Grammy-nominated collaborations with Kate McGarry, he has been the guitarist of choice for Harry Connick Jr., Kurt Elling, Luciana Souza, Peter Eldridge and many more acclaimed vocalists. He has also performed and/or recorded with a host of jazz legends including Christian McBride, Fred Hersch, Victor Lewis, Chris Potter, Andy Bey, Billy Drummond, Jay Anderson, and many others. He has performed on Late Night with David Letterman, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Ellen, The View and Australian Idol, and toured in four continents.

8 PM photos by NAN GOLDIN (usa)
music by THE TIGER LILLIES (uk) organized by Trafo House of Contemporary Arts The Ballad of Sexual Dependency Location | Budapest | 9th district | Liliom utca 41.
Further Information | www.trafo.hu
Nan Goldin is an example of an artist who works at the most intimate level: her life is her work and her work, her life. It is nearly impossible to discuss Goldin's photographs without referring to their subjects by name, as though the people pictured were one's own family and friends. It is this intimate and raw style for which Goldin has become internationally renowned. Her "snapshot"-esque images of her friends -- drag queens, drug addicts, lovers and family -- are intense, searing portraits that, together, make a document of Goldin's life. Goldin herself has commented on her photographic style and philosophy, saying, "My work originally came from the snapshot aesthetic . . . Snapshots are taken out of love and to remember people, places, and shared times. They're about creating a history by recording a history."
The Ballad of Sexual Dependency was made up of color photographs lit with flash, ran approximately 45 minutes. As Goldin evolved as an artist, the show also changed, and more photographs were added and songs were changed. Despite changes to the content of the show, the basic atmosphere of intimacy remained, and Goldin's visceral style communicated raw emotion. It was in 1986 that Goldin began to take her show on the road, traveling abroad to exhibit her work. Ballad saw screen time at both the Edinburgh and Berlin Film Festivals. The Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of Goldin's work in 1996; it was called I'll Be Your Mirror. Composed of photographs from every period of her career, the exhibit also boasted a showing of a version of The Ballad of Sexual Dependency.
Goldin continues to photograph and recently had her first solo show in London, at the popular White Cube Gallery. Her work continues to evolve with her life. Of this she writes, "My work changes as I change. I feel an artist's work has to change, otherwise you become a replication of yourself." With Goldin's close, immediate style and stunningly beautiful images, there is no threat of her becoming a replication.

Barbay Csaba: New York - Egy lépéssel hátrébbról
Most legalább olyan messze a fotó tárgyától, mint amilyen közel a megértéshez…
A megnyitóra szokásunkhoz híven most is gasztronómiai meglepetéssel készülünk.
Barbay Csaba ismert és elismert enteriőr és tárgyfotográfus. A legfontosabb magazinok közlik munkáit, a Flashback fotóműterem egyik alapítója.
New Yorkban, vagyis inkább a városról készített fekete-fehér fotóit mutatja be most a Három Hét Galéria.

Under the American tent, there will be music, arts and crafts, and fun quizzes for children and their families. Twice during the day, the Thousand Faces Multicultural Association’s hot air balloon will offer rides to America.
At the American Tent at 11 am, we will explore various parts of the USA, where we will learn the local myths and legends of the country. Together, we will sing, dance, play, and perform. Through interactive stories and skits, children may catch a glimpse of American diversity. The aim of our program is to expose everyone to America’s rich culture through engaging stories, literature, and music. We hope to encourage interest in America and openness to other cultures.
At 4 pm – this time on the main stage - as the guest presenter of the American Corner Budapest, the Thousand Faces Multicultural Association will present the Magical Hot Air Balloon Ride to America. On this beautiful day in May, when children are celebrated everywhere, the winds will carry us on our magical hot air balloon to discover the wonderful places in the United States. We will encounter familiar faces along our trip through music, story-telling, singing, and playing. We will help the frog find his voice and the Navajo child climb to the top of the white cliff. We will visit New Orleans, New York, and even the Grand Canyon in Arizona. We will get a taste of America’s melting pot culture and witness the diversity in this wonderful country.
