regular programs | MOVIE NIGHTS #5 title |DIVAN | Documentary by Pearl Gluck | 77 minutes
Registration required | amcorner@uni-corvinus.hu | Limited seats available
American Corner Budapest | Corvinus University | Salt House Building
In May 2009, the American Corner launched its second regular program series called Movie Nights. All the MOVIES are shown IN ENGLISH.The film screenings are FREE. All visitors are WELCOME. Present documentary is screened as an event of the Week of Nations at Corvinus University. Present event is also part of the Budapest Corner's Event Series of Tolerance, dedicated to Passover (Pesach), a Jewish holiday in the month of April.
About the Film
“To reclaim an ancestral couch upon which esteemed rabbis slept, Pearl Gluck travels from her Hasidic community in Brooklyn to her roots in Hungary. Along the way, a colorful cast of characters gets involved – the couch exporter, her ex-communist cousin in Budapest, a pair of matchmakers, and a renegade group of formerly ultra-Orthodox Jews. Divan is a visual parable that offers the possibility of personal reinvention and cultural re-upholstery.” (Quoted from www.palinkapictures.com)
Director's Statement
"It was my father who gave me my first video camera in 1996 as a gift for my trip to Hungary on a Fulbright grant. Five years later we end up in an editing room together viewing footage for Divan, a film he does not approve of and does not want to participate in. And yet, Divan is at its heart a father/daughter tale - he, the unwilling protagonist, which makes me the unwilling antagonist.
In some ways, it should come as no surprise that I took up film to tell stories. The camera was always a presence in my family history, my father behind the super 8, a silent witness to both dissolution of a family and also its ultimate realignment. But, where I come from, it's not part of the norm to watch movies, let alone create them, because it is considered a diversion from a life of piety, devotion, and modesty. Hence, the paradox of my cinematic project: on the one hand, film has informed my entire life, on the other hand, it was entirely forbidden.
Indeed it was in Hungary while conducting oral histories that my Hasidic past began to haunt me. The ruptured trajectory of my own family kept returning. In awe of the ruins of the Hungarian Jewish landscape, I was forced to confront my act of leaving the Hasidic community of my youth. Ever an ethnographer, I turned the camera inward. When I finally got to my great great grandfather's house and saw the famous couch upon which the Kossony rebbe slept, I saw the medium for understanding my own complex relationship with my Hasidic legacy. The couch became a magical homage to the rebbes, a sacred memory object, and a concrete tool for a personal and communal cultural archeology. It gave me the possibility of yearning, contemplating, and reflecting on the world I left behind.
While grappling with this loaded legacy, I met other people who also left the Hasidic and ultra-Orthodox world. Their voices form a chorus, that takes this film out of the realm of the strictly autobiographical and into a larger communal narrative. By interweaving the elements of my personal story with the chorus as well as the physicality of the couch itself, I sought to create a three-layered tapestry of a post-modern Hasidic tale, embracing the elements of mystery, devotion, and joy. After a long journey across the Atlantic, the divan emerges from its crate, and posits no easy resolution. Instead, I see it offering the possibility of culturally re-upholstering the framework of "home vs. exile" with the richly textured fabric of engagement.” (Quoted from www.palinkapictures.com)

Personal Profile, Edward H Sanborn IV
Born in the United States of America, I received my Bachelors degree from Dickinson College in 1968. I then spent the next ten years with Xerox Corporation as a salesman and then as a manager with profit and loss responsibility. My first experience in the world of finance was through the investment bank Morgan Stanley in San Francisco. Beginning in institutional sales--placing large investments with banks, pension funds and insurance companies--I ultimately moved to the corporate finance side of the business. Returning to Golden Gate University I completed my MBA with a minor in legal studies and soon formed my own investment advisory firm in 1984. Sanborn Capital Management was successful in raising funds for corporate venture capital projects and real estate primarily in California. That success led to a move to Hungary at around the time of the transition in 1990. First serving as an advisor in privatization, I began making direct investments into real estate and corporate opportunities in Central Europe with a primary focus in Hungary. Notable among a couple of dozen transactions was the founding and expansion of Euronet, a pan European ATM operator, and its eventual flotation on the NasDaq exchange in America; also, the founding of the thriving internet portal- Index.hu Rt. As an experienced “Angel” investor I have continued to nurture promising young companies such as IND Group, a leading European banking software developer founded in Miskolc, Hungary.
The Strategic Business Workshop for Entrepreneurs is supported by Sanborn Capital Management, the Embassy of the United States of America and the American Corner Budapest at Corvinus University.

On the one-year anniversary of the opening of the American Corner Budapest, in commemoration of Black History Month in the US, life-long human rights activist Michael Simmons gave a presentation on “The Legacy of the Civil Rights Movement”. When he was just 19 years old, Mr. Simmons joined the African American Civil Rights Movement, which fought against discrimination, segregation, and violence against African Americans in the US South in the 1960s. He was a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, also known as SNCC (pronounced “snick”). One of the main points he emphasized in his presentation was that the African American Civil Rights Movement was a movement of young people – mainly in their late teens to early twenties. He encouraged the young people in the audience to understand that for things to change, in any situation or country, it is not necessary to wait around for an elder to come and lead them. To make changes in the world, it is always enough for young people to take the lead and show their elders that a different world is possible.

Mr. Simmons painted a picture of what life was like for African Americans in the segregated US South and shared stories of his own personal experiences in the movement, describing the danger both activists and ordinary African Americans faced during the struggle to claim their rights, including not being able to count on the police to stop violence against them. His presentation included showing a segment of the award-winning documentary of the Civil Rights Movement, Eyes on the Prize (the full documentary is available for viewing in the American Corner library). The segment described the Freedom Rides, a series of organized bus rides from Washington DC to New Orleans, in which black and white activists would ride the buses together, in defiance of a custom of segregation in public transportation that continued as normal, even though laws had been passed prohibiting such segregation. Mr. Simmons described the background to the Freedom Rides, which will have their 50th anniversary next year.

In describing the legacy of the civil rights movement, Mr. Simmons felt that one of the most important lessons to be learned from the African American Civil Rights Movement is that history should not stand in the way of progress. This does not mean that people should not fight against injustice when it occurs. However, events that happened in the past should not continue to keep people apart for years and years. People, especially young people, should not let historical events stop them from building bridges to the future.
