US Embassy 2010 Tolerance Video Competition Awards Ceremony

The American Embassy in Budapest has sponsored the 2010 Tolerance Video Competition to highlight the importance of practicing tolerance towards others. High school students in Hungary have been invited to submit a short video clip on YouTube that captures the tolerance message in a creative, imaginative, and thought-provoking way. Finalists  were invited to an awards ceremony, hosted by the U.S. Embassy and  the American Corner Budapest office on June 1, 2010 at Berzsenyi High School in Budapest.

Ráday Street Cultural Festival between June 4 - 6, 2010 organises many programs, one amongst them is a program called Meseház ('House of Tales') dedicated to children and telling tales to children in foreign languages. The American Corner Budapest is hosting a one-hour story telling session in English. Children’s programs will take place in the cozy 'Tent of Tales' (Mesék Sátra) on Ráday street. Flora Csontos, American Corner Budapest intern from California and native speaker volunteers will read stories and teach songs and rhymes in English.

Before the summer recess, our last event, celebrating US Independence Day, will take place at 5:30 pm on June 29th (Tuesday), featuring a small reception and a Literary Evening by Bruce Holland Rogers, a multiple award-winning American writer who will perform a reading of his very short stories.

Bruce Holland Rogers
has a home base in Eugene, Oregon, the tie-dye capital of the world, but until July of 2008 he had been living in London, England. Presently, he is in Hungary for six months as a Fulbright scholar. His fiction is all over the literary map, including science fiction, fantasy, literary works, mysteries, experimental fiction and work that is hard to label.

The evening will be opened by Mr Edward Loo, Public Affairs Officer of the US Embassy. Welcome remarks will also be delivered by Erika Sólyom, Director of American Corner Budapest and Dr. Norbert Kis, Vice-Rector for International Affairs.

Here, the American Corner Budapest staff would like to take the opportunity to thank DR. NORBERT KIS -- the leaving Vice-Rector for International Affairs as well as supervisor of the American Corner Budapest office -- for his work and continuous support of the American Corner since its opening day. At the same time, we would like to express a special welcome to DR. SÁNDOR KEREKES, the incoming Corner supervisor as of July 1, 2010 as well as Vice-Rector for Academic and International Affairs at Corvinus University, the host institution of the American Corner Budapest office.

The Secretary’s Innovation Award for the Empowerment of Women and Girls seeks to find and bring to scale the most pioneering approaches to the political, economic and social empowerment of women and girls around the globe. Funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, the the $ 500,000 award is part of the State Department’s continuing emphasis on public-private partnerships, and is administered by its Office of Global Women’s Issues.

Professional Fellowship Program for Multiply-Disadvantaged People at the US Embassy in Budapest
The Embassy of the United States in Budapest is pleased to announce the second round of its Professional Fellowship Program for multiply-disadvantaged people. The fellowship aims to develop professional skills that potential employers consider beneficial. The Embassy is committed to ensuring a fair and transparent selection process. The program is designed for multiply-disadvantaged people who have either recently graduated from college/university or will graduate in 2010.
